TODD THIMIOS _WINGS Manta Maldives ← Back to Birds of a Feather collection

The Birds of a Feather Series came about with the recent opportunity to spend an extended amount of time in the the Maldives over 2019 studying and observing the Reef Manta “Mobula alfredi”. Closely observed luna patterns coinciding with an influx of phytoplankton created not only one of the most unique but graceful feeding migrations on the planet.

To portray this event in all its awe and distinctive beauty, I wanted to express a body of work that not only depicted grace and beauty but visualised the behaviour and experience underwater. The series needed to raise awareness in such a way that it would encourage a sense of value and need for protection. A conceptual approach of immersing the audience and portraying a certain “point of view” angle would captivate viewers into a sense of placement and presence.
